The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms (1953) was responsible for a whole 1950s sub-genre of radiation-magnified monsters, while Empire of the Ants (1977) is best remembered as a testament to genre resilience.
Today it's a double bill of sci-fi/horror monster features. MONSTERS ATTACK: Kennington's Cinema Museum hosts the inaugural Lost Reels event, screening classics, curios and forgotten gems on 16mm. Using the Greek capture of the Persian king during the Greco-Persian wars as a starting point, it explores luxury as a political tool in the Middle East and southeast Europe from 550-30 BC. PERSIA TO GREECE: The British Museum has just opened a new exhibition, Luxury and power: Persia to Greece. Highlights this Saturday and Sunday include an open day at Dulwich Picture Gallery, a sustainable market, a wild teddy bears' picnic and a street art walk.

From 12 MayĭULWICH FESTIVAL: It's the first full weekend of this year's Dulwich Festival, a celebration of the culture and history of the local area. The Wonder of Friendship involves four themed rooms, namely: the Alice in Wonderland Garden of Mystery the Lilo & Stitch Ohana Bay the Lion King Orchestral Oasis and the Mickey and Friends Wonderverse, and is recommended for people 18+. 13 and 14 MayĭISNEY 100: This year mark 100 years since the founding of the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, so an immersive Disney experience is opening on Strand.
